PASSIVE VOICE – Explanation


What is it?


In passive voice, the focus is on the action and who/what receives it, NOT who does it.

Structure:


Subject + BE (in correct tense) + Past Participle (V3) [+ by agent (optional)]

Compare:


Active:

The chef cooked the meal. (Focus = chef)


Passive:

The meal was cooked (by the chef). (Focus = the meal)

TENSES IN PASSIVE:




When do we use it?


When the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious.

→ The windows were broken.


To sound formal or objective.

→ You will be contacted soon.

Examples:


The email was sent this morning.


These cookies are made with love.


The song has been played all day.


The documents will be reviewed by the manager.


The chairs are being moved to the hall.
